Strategic Planning -- Planning in Times of Uncertainty

As we emerge from the COVID-19 Pandemic, planning for the future is more important than ever before. The environment senior living organizations operate in is fraught with unknowns and risk and with the expected pace of new competition from the for-profit sector, the changing consumer and dated physical plants, organizations must adapt to maintain their competitive position. Through thoughtful strategic planning, organizations can address these challenges. Strategic Planning is occurring more frequently and the importance of getting it right is critical to many organizations’ ability to survive. Given Strategic Planning is different now than before the Pandemic, this session will discuss how some organizations are approaching strategic planning and we’ll hear examples of how providers are executing on their strategic plans.

Objectives:

  1. To provide attendees with key information needed for strategic planning efforts.
  2. Gain insights into the “inside process” of evolving a growth strategy, gaining alignment among constituents, and executing on a variety of different initiatives to enhance the future of organizations
  3. To learn from peer organizations about what is needed to successfully execute on strategic plans

Speakers: Toby Shea, Erik Dalen (OnePoint Partners), Joan Cusson (GoddardHomestead Inc.)

Philanthropy Re-Imagined

As not-for-profit organizations, we are often dependent on financial contributions to support residents who have depleted funds, to expand services and to provide for vulnerable older adults in the community at large. The pandemic has shifted how organizations need to approach their fundraising arm, but the changing consumer dynamic is also shaping philanthropy efforts. This session will highlight important fundraising benchmarks for not-for-profit senior living providers and will give advice on how to move forward with a successful fundraising platform. The presentation will include provider perspective and stories, as well.

Objectives:

  1. To redefine what not-for-profit senior living fundraising looks like.
  2. To share meaningful philanthropy benchmarks specific to not-for-profit senior living.
  3. To walk away with key elements that organizations can adopt to have a successful fundraising arm.

Speakers: Cedric Richner (Marts & Lundy), Anne Thomas (Glenmeadow), Tameryn Campbell (Overlook)

We will close out the Symposium with a facilitated discussion on how aging services organizations are planning for and managing CEO transitions.  We will hear from CEOs and Board members who will share their organization’s experience with succession planning and leadership transitions.  With the pandemic accelerating retirement plans of many CEOs, it is critical that non-profit organizations have plans in place.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the impact senior leadership turnover has within organizations
  2. With the strategic direction of the organization in mind, how do Boards determine the best candidate for the CEO position
  3. Identify best practices in succession planning
