Melissa Andrews joined the LeadingAge Virginia staff as President & CE O in 2016 after 14 years with LeadingAge (national). LeadingAge Virginia is an association of not-for-profit aging services providers, serving the ent ire continuum, expanding the world of possibilities for aging. Their vision of positive aging for each Virginian is one they seek to attain through ad vocacy, education, and establishing a leadership position within the Common wealth.
Prior to joining the LeadingAge Virginia team, Melissa served as the Vice President, Board Development & Member Relations at Leading Age (national), facilitating board development retreats and strategic plann ing processes around the country. Melissa continues to serve as a governanc e resource in her current role, facilitating leadership retreats/processes nationally focused on the role of the board, the relationship between board and staff leadership, strategic planning, mission/vision/values redevelopm ent and board structure, composition and practices.
Melissa is a freq uent speaker at conferences, educational events and has been featured in me dia interviews about dementia and aging/older adult services issues.
Melissa was a class of 2010 LeadingAge Larry Minnix Leadership Academy fell ow. In 2012, she received the BoardSource© Certificate of Nonprofit Board E ducation, and in 2013, Melissa received The Coalition for Leadership in Agi ng Services’ Certified Aging Services Professional national certification.
Melissa holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from Boston C ollege. She lives in Richmond, VA with her husband, daughter, stepchildren and French Bulldog. Her “why’s” in life are her family and positively impac ting the aging experience both in Virginia and across the nation.
Tom joined Sims in May of 2019 after seven years serving not-for-profit senior living organiza tions at BB&T Capital Markets (now Truist Securities). Tom oversees the development and growth of the Firm’s practice in the southeast, and approa ches engagements with clients as an advocate. To date, Tom has financed ove r $2 billion for the development, acquisition, expansion and refinancing of Life Plan Communities.
Tom has spoken at numerous LeadingAge Confer ences on a variety of topics from refinancing to moderate priced housing. T om earned a B.S. in Accounting and Business Administration from Washington and Lee University where he was elected to the Honor Council and played on the Varsity Golf Team.
Boris Henderson, Chief Strategy Officer, Aldersgate Life Plan Service Inc.
Boris Henderson is a graduate of David son College and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Wake Forest University in 2006. He is currently a doctorate student at the Hoo d Theological Seminary with a concentration in community advocacy and socia l justice.
Currently, Boris is the Chief Strategy Officer for Aldersgate Life Plan Service Inc. where he primarily f ocuses on growth initiatives, which include a master site plan (includes an affordable housing component). Previously, Boris was the Vice President o f Commercial Real Estate Development and Special Projects at Charlotte-Meck lenburg Housing Partnership. His primary focus was mixed income housing, commercial development and economic development initiatives. Upon graduat ing from Davidson College, Boris held various real estate credit risk manag ement and underwriting roles at Wells Fargo, Wachovia Corp. and Wachovia Se curities, which spanned a 13-year period. Boris has a deep financial, real estate development (all product types), multifamily housing and economic d evelopment background.
Boris remains dee ply involved within Charlotte and the broader community. He currently ser ves as a Johnston YMCA board member, he is a past chair of the board of Hab itat for Humanity Charlotte Region, and he currently serves as a Board Dire ctor for Habitat for Humanity International.
Greg Hensley, Senior VP, Plante Moran Living Forward
As a relationship ma nager at Plante Moran Living Forward, Greg helps strategically position new and existing senior living communities as desirable homes for current and future residents. Greg offers more than 30 years of project design and cons truction experience, with the last 16 years working predominately on the ow ner’s side as an operations’ executive in large senior living communities.< /p>
Greg’s expertise is in strategic repositioning. As an operations’ exe cutive, he has overseen operating budgets of more than $25 million per year while transforming campuses through repositioning plans. He has led dozens of master planning design charrettes to create an exciting new future for residents, staff, and visitors to senior living communities. He has oversee n the development of more than $400 million in new construction and renovat ions in the last 30 years. He is especially talented at helping executive t eams and boards effectively conceptualize the future of their community bef ore spending resources on costly design and construction documents. He insp ires administrators to understand how to lead an organization through chang e from both a design and an operational perspective.
Formerly, Greg w orked with several large non-profit senior living providers in Ohio and ser ved as a vice president of the 15th largest life plan community in the coun try. He also worked as a designer and project manager for a national leader in the design of senior living campuses across the country. Greg received his bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering from Oklahoma State Univ ersity. He is a professional engineer in Virginia, Oklahoma, and Kansas; Ce rtified Aging Services Professional (CASP); and Certified Executive for Ass isted Living (Ohio CEAL®).
Mary Kemper, President & CEO, United Methodist Association of Health & Welfare Ministries
Mary has served as President and CEO of UMA since 2016, and brings more than 30 years of association management expertise to UMA. This national, f aith-based association represents more than 70 organizations overseeing mor e than 300 campuses and programs serving seniors, children, youth, and fami lies, persons with disabilities, Mary is passionately dedicated to UMA’s mi ssion to promote, inspire recognize and empower excellence in human service s ministries.
As part of that mission, she also oversees the EAGLE-ac creditation program, which is the only faith-based accrediting body in the country. She enjoys cultivating networks, best practices and strategic alli ances among UMA’s spirit-driven ministries to support their work to better the lives of people and communities.
Prior to serving UMA, Mary serve d as Director of Education at LeadingAge and worked with more than 100 nati onal keynote speakers, developed key programming for two national conferenc es and lead the development of education programming for the LeadingAge PA Annual Conference. She was among only ten national participants of the 2016 LeadingAge Leadership Educator Program.
Melinda Jordan Payne
Melinda Jordan Payne is one-year into retirement as
Director of Economic Development for the City of Salem, a job she held for
20 years. Prior to joining Salem, Ms. Payne served as interim director and
an Economic Development Specialist for the City of Roanoke. For nearly 25
years she worked as a journalist, recruiting and training manager, customer
service manager, circulation manager and single copy sales manager at The
Roanoke Times. Ms. Payne's professional career also includes a stint at WDB
J-TV where she worked as a reporter and weekend anchor. Before joining the
City of Roanoke, Ms. Payne operated her own consulting firm, MJP Consulting
, which focused on customer service, team management, diversity, business w
riting, marketing, and other needs of those in the business arena.
Ms . Payne is a graduate of Hollins College, where she attended DEI Training a t the Fetzer Institute in Kalamazoo, MI. She also served as a DEI trainer f or the Virginia Press Association for many years.
A number of organiz ations throughout Southwest Virginia has recognized Ms. Payne for her contr ibutions to the community. The honors include the YWCA of Roanoke Valley Wo man of Achievement for her contributions in the field of government and pol itics; Gamma Alpha Chapter Fraternity as Citizen of the Year; the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Martin Luther King Drum Major for Ju stice; the Silver Beaver Award, the highest civilian honor awarded by the B oy Scouts. During 2001, she received the Military Patriotism Award for lead ing the charge to return the pledge of allegiance to the daily start of sch ool in Roanoke City. Ms. Payne served as Campaign Chair of the United Way of Roanoke Valley, being the first and only African American to hold that p osition. Her year in that post also marked a record level of giving as the United Way raised the most money in its history, a esteem honor she still h olds. Next year, Ms. Payne will become chair of the United Way board. She has been recognized twice as a distinguished president of the Salem Kiwanis Club. She is a founding member of Literacy Volunteers of Roanoke Valley. H er community involvement is extensive. She is a past chair of the Roanoke C ity School Board, having served on that board for nine years. She currently serves as an active member of the boards of Harrison Museum of African Ame rican Culture, Health Focus of Southwest Virginia, Freedom First Credit Uni on, Richfield Retirement Community, Botetourt County Wide League, the Altru ist Club of Roanoke, and several others. She serves as the clerk at her chu rch, Blue Ridge Baptist in Botetourt County.
Ms. Payne is the proud m other of Jamie, who is in charge of Fedstar Federal Credit Union, now InFir st in the Salem/Roanoke Valley, and son-in-law Raysean Priest, a lieutenant in the Roanoke City Fire Department. She has two grandchildren, Olivia, ei ght, and Sean Jaxson, five. She also has four siblings: Alvin Jordan, Merl e King, Mary Jordan and Marsha Jordan Akers, all of whom live in the Roanok e Valley.
Dana Wollschlager, Practice Leader & Partner, P lante Moran Living Forward
As the national senior living dev elopment practice leader, Dana specializes in advising senior living owners and operators on development and operational best practices. This includes strategic planning, market feasibility, financial feasibility, regulatory compliance, project management, construction oversight, and operational eff iciencies.
With more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, Dana has overseen the development of more than half a billion in new constructio n including 2,400 units of senior housing and skilled nursing within the la st 5 years. Her development projects have been comprised of a variety of se nior communities in urban and rural settings, as well as significant campus expansions and remodeling projects. Her experience also includes green des ign and construction, congregational senior housing, hospital campus senior housing, nursing home campus repositioning, collegiate senior housing and complex remodeling projects. Prior to joining Plante Moran, Dana was a regi onal director of housing operations at Ecumen and later joined the new business development team. There she led the organization in the singl e largest expansion in the firm’s history of both owned and managed senior housing communities as well as skilled nursing home repositioning projects.
Dana attended the University of Minnesota and is a certified occupan cy manager, residential manager, and assisted housing manager.
