LeadingAge MA's 2019 Professional Development Workshop, "Exceptional Team Members: Grow Your Talents, Expand Your Mindset and Love The Work You Do," is a development opportunity for front-line staff, which includes CNAs, dining staff, maintenance staff or anyone who works directly with residents and consumers on a daily basis. These employees are crucial to the success of your organizations and the satisfaction and well-being of residents.
This one-day event will cover 6 modules that will focus on key skills needed to succeed and excel in this field. Each module involves education by our facilitator, an experiential exercise, and time for participants to share their takeaways. Additionally, participants will be encouraged to share how they will utilize what they learned back at their organization.

Speaker

Denise Boudreau-Scott is President of Drive, which helps aging services organizations improve the resident and staff experience, and the bottom-line, through more engaged leaders and employees. A former nursing home and assisted living administrator, Denise co-founded and is chairperson of the New Jersey Alliance for Culture Change, a member of NAB’s LNHA Exam Writing Committee, chair of NAB’s Member Relations Committee and a former board member of the Pioneer Network. Denise received her Bachelor of Science in Gerontology from the University of Scranton and her Master in Health Administration from Cornell University where she serves as a student mentor and speaker. She is proud to share that she started off her career as a dietary aide and nursing assistant. Denise lives at the Jersey Shore with her husband, twin boys, one rescued Lab and a mutant Chihuahua who weighs 26 pounds!

Agenda

8:30 am           Registration and Continental Breakfast

9:00 am           Ice Breakers

9:30 am           The Positivity Pact

In this impactful exercise, participants will learn how and why they need to have a daily attitude of gratitude and focus on the positive. Participants will learn ways to decrease negativity in the workplace and will be invited to participate in a 30-day positivity challenge that impacts their interactions at home, work and in the community.

Purpose: Focusing on positive interactions between team members and with patients/residents can have a powerful impact on personal and organizational goals. Teaching this as the first module builds confidence for trainers and sets team members off on the right foot.

10:15 am         Apples and Oranges

Staff will participate in a fun exercise based on the Myers-Briggs assessment. Participants will learn about different personality types and how they are wired similar or different from their peers. The exercise is designed to give insight on how each person is unique and no position on the continuum is right or wrong, just different. Once differences are appreciated, staff will learn how to embrace them instead of fighting them and communicate more effectively with all personality types.

Purpose: Through this exercise participants will learn how to become aware of and learn to appreciate the differences between coworkers and residents.

11:00 am         Break

11:15 am         “What Did You Say?”

Participants will experience first-hand the importance of good communication through an exercise that will allow them to understand the subtle skills required to ensure their message is shared and received.

Participants will sit back to back with another peer and one will be the communicator of a picture, while the other listens and draws the picture based on what they heard. The true learning comes after the exercise when people learn that even when they think they are communicating a clear message, it isn’t always received that way!

Purpose: Learn that precise speaking and active listening are at the core of successful communication.

12:00 pm         Lunch

12:45 pm           One Piece of the Puzzle

An interactive exercise, using customized cards that each represent a different aspect of a resident’s life, before and after their stay in the home. (Ex. Worked the night shift, had a fall, lost his wife, became incontinent etc.) Staff will work together to place the cards in the correct timeline, learning as they go how their approach to their work impacts each other, resident outcomes and reinforces every resident has their individual story.

Purpose: Learn that each team member has a unique piece of a resident’s puzzle and by working together they can create a person-centered picture of the resident.

1:30 pm           Walking in Their Shoes

Participants will take part in a visualization exercise to envision life as a resident in their own home. They will be asked to visualize, “What would YOU would want if you lived in our home.” This is not about teaching participants, but rather guiding them to have their own “a-ha” moment: that each resident has a purpose and individual needs, and it’s our role to fulfill them. As participants create a mental picture of the future, they begin to see that achieving it is possible!

Purpose: Staff will learn what is valued by the residents they care for and support, and the importance of knowing each person as an individual.

2:15 pm           Break

2:30 pm           Compassion in Action

Compassion means “to suffer together.” It is defined as the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another’s suffering and feel motivated to act to relieve that suffering. Though it is related, compassion is not the same as empathy. Empathy means you feel the emotions of another. Empathy is the basis of compassion but compassion occurs when those feelings include the desire to help.

Purpose: Participants will learn strategies to demonstrate compassion with others, including residents, team members and even their own family.

3:15 pm           Wrap up Questions
